Former Police Station, Trinity Road, Bristol

OVERVIEW:

The former police station on Trinity Road, Bristol, was a multi-storey structure with both 3-storey and single-storey sections, including a basement.

CHALLENGE

The demolition process is divided into three distinct zones to maintain control and safety.

The Red Zone is the exclusion area where no personnel are permitted, representing the immediate drop zone for debris.

The Amber Zone allows access only to authorized personnel such as plant operators and banksmen, and is typically used during secondary processing and when demolishing sections.

The Green Zone is the safe area for non-operational staff and visitors. As the demolition progresses, zones are adjusted to reflect the status of the building’s structure, ensuring a dynamic but safe working environment throughout the project.

SOLUTION

The demolition of the Trinity Road police station showcases the strategic planning and execution needed for urban demolitions. The structure’s mix of multi-storey and basement levels required a tailored approach, using both hand and mechanical techniques.

The integration of Cat 336, 340, and 323 Excavators, equipped with specialised demolition attachments, allowed for precise deconstruction of the building. High-priority materials, such as timber floor joists and concrete sections, were processed and segregated on-site, maximising efficiency and minimising waste.

RESULT

Site logistics also played a crucial role in the project’s success. The use of pre-planned vehicle access and dedicated banksmen to oversee traffic, coupled with ongoing ground condition assessments, minimised potential hazards. Dust suppression systems were employed to manage airborne particles during the pulverising of concrete, further demonstrating Lawson Demolition’s commitment to environmental considerations and operational safety.
