OVERVIEW:
This case study focuses on Lawson Group’s asbestos removal contract with BMW Swindon, specifically addressing the central and east sections of the electrical store. The scope of work includes proactive removal of AIB high-level fire break panels at roof level within the Electrical Store and Welding area.
CHALLENGE
Operating within a live manufacturing environment 24/7 posed significant challenges. Lawson Group strategically planned the removal process of Amosite Asbestos Insuation Boards and Chrysotile Putty, to minimise disruptions, scheduling operations around the manufacturing timetable. Three large areas, each exceeding 20,000m³, were targeted for asbestos removal, necessitating careful coordination and precision. Working at heights up to 10 metres further heightened the complexity, requiring the construction of temporary enclosures to ensure a secure work environment. Continuous monitoring by independent analysts ensured compliance with safety standards throughout the project.
METHODOLOGY
Lawson Group adhered strictly to Health and Safety Executive (HSE) guidelines for licensed asbestos removal. Our methodology included rigorous decontamination procedures and the establishment of airtight enclosures, verified through thorough smoke testing before commencing work. Working within Mobile Elevated Work Platforms (MEWPs), operatives employed surface spraying and shadow vacuuming techniques for effective removal. Our team of eight fully trained operatives received comprehensive training and supervision, ensuring adherence to PPE requirements and specialised removal techniques recommended by the HSE. SOLUTION
Through meticulous planning, adherence to safety protocols, and compliance with regulatory standards, we successfully completed the asbestos removal project without compromising manufacturing operations. These included adequate use of PPE, full training and supervision of operatives, sealed enclosures with negative pressure and Air Locks and Bag Locks in place along side a rigourous decontamination process (DCU).
Our commitment to safety, efficiency, and compliance underscores our expertise in managing complex asbestos removal tasks within live industrial environments. The client was awared a Certificate of Reoccupation as a result of the satisfactory completion of the removal process.
RESULT
The site was left cleared and secured to the satisfaction of the client, ready for the next stage of redevelopment within the 6 week schedule we set out to achieve.
